bluesky rambling, semi-inflated follow numbers
Some real weird following shit going on over at Bluesky. Because of how feeds are integrated centrally into the app, a lot of folks really only scroll through a specific feed rather than their entire following list.
As a result, tons of folks are mass following folks (I'm talking 25k, 60k, 90k people) just to get their own follower numbers up due to some people following back just because.
But in my experience, engagement is much less there than here. I've even seen people with thousands of followers more than me who get little engagement with their posts, have to repost em a few times, etc.
Real weird behavior. Bluesky tires me out sometimes due to this. I've posted before about how it almost feels charged and the energy is so frenetic. Or maybe I just got used to the fediverse and having no company trying to force me to spend as much time as possible on their platform. Idk

Also I am suffering over there because I have gotten used to 10,000 character posts I keep having to do threads and it's cruel and unusual punishment!!

@tillshadeisgone yeah, I made an account a few days ago and that's what I feel as well.
One of the reasons I supposedly should have an account there is "a wider audience", but hashtags seem to be as sparsely used as on the fediverse, searches without hashtags have a lot of random posts that might not turn up stuff I want to read and most accounts that discover mine "organically" are from people who don't even seem to speak the same language who are likely following just so I stumble upon what they're selling.

@tillshadeisgone yeah, my original take that I'm sticking with after using bsky for a while: bsky is like a cool fun party. Fedi is like a cool fun coffee shop. Similar, but not the same. Different ways of interacting are rewarded in those different environments. I don't think either is bad or either is better than the other for me, just different flavors.

@tillshadeisgone yeah ... a Twitter alternative is going to inherit Twitter's weaknesses as well as strengths. It has always been more charged than here, and the vibe has changed a lot there over the last six months (unsuprising due to the rapid growth). Also there's a lot more follow-farming -- not just for ego, also laying the basis for scams and disinfo -- and starter packs mean that a lot of people who don't want a lot of followers have thousands, which magnifies reply-guy-ism. So as bad as the current controversy is, that's only one of the big challenges they're facing.

@tillshadeisgone god that doesn't sound great honestly
